People to People International- Europe invites young people from around the world to participate in the Master Class “Data Management as a Career Option“.  It will take place on April 28 at 19:00 CET, online via Zoom. This Master Class is primarily intended for university and late-year high school students that would like to explore a career in data and its management. It would also be useful for any student that wants to expand their knowledge in this aspect of computer science.

The Master Class will be led by PTPI US Member Michael Hermida. Michael (Mike) Hermida held various technical and management positions during a sixteen-year career with IBM. He designed and developed operating systems and access methods for the USA’s Air Traffic Control System and ground-based NASA Space Shuttle Programs. He was a lead architect for NASA’s Spacelab Command and Control System. He was also a technical member of the field test team for the rollout of IBM’s DB2 database management system. Following his IBM career, he started a consulting company with a partner that specialized in data strategies, data architecture, database design and data warehousing, consulting for a number of Fortune 500 companies. He has developed and taught numerous seminars and classes on programming and data management. Mike is an internationally acclaimed lecturer and instructor speaking extensively to professional groups both nationally and internationally on data and database management topics.

Why attend this Master Class?

When people think of computer science and computer related activities many automatically think of programming. However, there is a related set of data functions to investigate, collect, define, design, implement, and maintain databases. These functions have led to a number of high paying career positions in virtually all business, government, and academic institutions.

Attendees will better understand data and its characteristics; its importance in business as well as your everyday life; how it should be effectively managed; career options in data; and skills useful in data management. Potential career paths are discussed based on a student’s interest and skills.

Topics covered during the Master Class:

  • What is (are) data?
  • What is a database?
  • Business functions dependent on data.
  • What is data management?
  • Some amazing things being done today based on data.
  • What type of positions are there for me in data management?

The Master Class is expected to last between 60 and 75 minutes, including time for student questions.
